How to Drown out the Noise - Part One
Sunday, July 22nd, 2007The noise I’m talking about is the extra filler you get in your mail box. It’s not spam, and it may not be junk mail…but for now, you’re not sure if it’s important.
Here’s what I mean. It seems like every time I throw my email address out there to get a free report or mini-course, I get signed on for life to somebody’s list. Then once the course is done I continue to receive mail from them.
I don’t mind this. Especially if I wanted the course enough to give my address and I found value in the course. In fact, I will often go ahead and purchase what they’re selling or stay on their list just to see what they come up with next. Because – and this is big – because I think it will have some value to me.
But I’m just starting so I’m not really sure what I need, what I want, or what I can use. So right now I’m getting a lot of mail.
So my incoming email falls into three categories. (BTW, my use of ‘guys’ means ‘all of them’, not ‘all the men’. It neither includes nor excludes women or men…it’s just a catchall for ‘all’. End of politically correct spiel and CYA explanation.)
The Ones I Love
These are the ones who have already ‘sold’ me even though I may not have bought anything from them yet. You have them, too, I’ll bet. I read their email as soon as it comes in. And I notice when I haven’t heard anything in a while and check their site, or their blog. (BTW, I have only have four that fall into this category.)
The Ones I Like
In fact, there are lots of people online who are providing great value and information to me – for free. All I had to do was sign-up. And they have some great products that I really want. But I know I’m not there yet. The material sounds great but given I’m just starting I am trying to limit what I buy to things I can immediately use. I think about it as ‘Just in time’ training. Since I have a rudimentary website and no advertising budget, I don’t really need the latest greatest course on SEO (search engine optimization) even if it will make me a gazillion dollars before I finish my shower every morning.
I have a number of people in this group and I always read their emails – just not right away.
The Ones I Hate
This category is easy. I unsubscribe and go straight to the trash with these guys. These are the ones who try to sell me something on the first email or I joined one list for a small-ticket ebook and the guy immediately tried to upsell me to an online course costing thousands of dollars. No-brainer. Trash.
The Ones That Make Noise
These are the ones I’m on the fence about. I may not even know who they are or what they have to offer. I ended up on their list by joining another list. You know – you sign up for something and ‘as a bonus’ (woo hoo), you get subscribed to 23 other freakin’ lists. I look at this stuff once. It quickly goes to ‘Ones I Hate’ or it stays in this category because I might feel that somewhere down the road I want to look into it further. That’s wishy-washy but basically I scan their email, take a quick look at the web site and decide - Hate or Noise.
Now the whole purpose of this is to drown out the noise. I want to make money online. I am a prime target for the dream-sellers. But I know that often, in a bucket of crap, you’ll find a nugget of gold. So I don’t want to throw out the whole bucket, but if I’m going to accomplish anything through the course of the day I need to get on with it.
In Part Two, I’ll share with you exactly how I do that….get on with it and drown out the noise.
